Wicked (2024)
There are some films that lean hard into spectacle—and Wicked is one of them. It’s bold, lavish, and unapologetically theatrical, the kind of blockbuster-musical that demands your full attention while wrapping you in technicolor magic and soaring vocals.
The story takes us to the land of Oz before the yellow brick road, exploring the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (played with fierce intensity by Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda (the effervescent Ariana Grande). What unfolds is a story about otherness, power, and identity—yes, with a lot of show tunes and glitter—but it doesn’t shy away from bigger themes.
Visually, Wicked is a feast: sumptuous costumes, sweeping sets, bold green and pink contrasts, and inventive choreography. Critics have praised its “magical retelling” and “thrilling spectacle”. On the flip side, some pacing issues and narrative bloat sneak in—yes, it runs long, and yes, it only covers the first half of the story.
For my taste, it hits the sweet spot of fun and meaning. The songs are emotionally grounded (yes, I sang along), the performances feel alive, and while it leans big, it still makes you care. If you’re in the mood for fantasy that sparkles, has heart, and asks “what does it mean to belong?”—then this is your film.
A magical, gorgeous ride that doesn’t hide its ambition—and mostly pulls it off.
