Q:

Moana 2 (2024)

When the wave-splashed long-awaited sequel to Moana arrived, it came riding on spectacle and nostalgia—and for the most part, it delivers. Moana 2 is nothing short of a visual feast: the animation is exquisite (especially the ocean scenes), the Polynesian culture remains respectfully portrayed, and our heroine once again proves that she’s not a princess waiting to be saved, but a leader who saves.

That said, the film is somewhat held back by its narrative structure. Critics noted that while the first film introduced a tight, compelling arc, this sequel stretches itself thin—pulling in new characters, expanding its mythos, and yet never quite focusing on a singular, emotionally resonant conflict. The music, too, doesn’t hit with the same spark as the first; while several songs are serviceable, they lack the unforgettable hooks that made Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work in the original so iconic.

On the flip side, it succeeds brilliantly for what it is: a family-friendly adventure packed with charm, heart, and gorgeous imagery. For younger viewers especially, it’s a joyous ride—alive with coconut-shell humor, friendly ensemble dynamics, and the kind of ocean-bound excitement that makes Disney animation a go-to.

Highlights:

  • Stunning visuals: Every frame pops with color, movement and depth—especially the water and the islands.

  • Strong heroine & cultural roots: Moana remains an appealing role model and the sequel preserves much of the original’s cultural authenticity.

  • Fun for children: If you’re bringing kids, this film stands tall as a solid choice.

Lowlights:

  • Uneven story structure: The narrative feels more episodic than tightly plotted, which undercuts tension.

  • Songs don’t soar: The soundtrack has good moments, but doesn’t match the emotional resonance or memorability of the first film.

  • Less raw emotional power: There are fewer stakes and the film doesn’t push the emotional envelope in the same way.

Verdict: Moana 2 doesn’t surpass the original—and it probably never intended to—but it serves as a worthy continuation of Moana’s tale. If you’re coming in with fresh eyes (rather than comparing it to a much-loved first film), you’ll find a lot to enjoy. Kids will love it. Adults will be charmed, even if they might wish for a little more bite.
